The focus of this chapter is on the subtle interplay between the human need for a social identity and the design principle of a capitalist economy to grow. The work of Thorstein Veblen, the institutional economist, in anatomising the nature of consumption as a means of establishing social status, underpins much of the discussion in this chapter and it forms the focus for Section 7.1. Section 7.2 moves on to provide evidence of the central role that consumption plays in the identity of members of industrial societies and the threat to their survival posed by the failure of such an identity. Sections 7.3 explores how an economic system that is designed to grow must be supported by the creation of demand on both the production and the consumption sides of the economy and how that identity is inherently unsatisfying. Section 7.4 sketches out how a bioregional economy could offer an attitude to consumption based on a recognition of abundance and on embedded relationships with the local natural environment and our fellow creatures, and Section 7.5 briefly concludes.
